This week the News has yet again been filled with stories about the US’s attacking Iran.
There have been reports of consecutive nights of airstrikes happening on Iran since President Donald Trump declared the temporary ceasefire agreement was "over".
The US is said to be hitting key infrastructure and its reported that airports, bridges and water utilities in parts of the country have been hit.
So what is the significance of this in relation to Bible prophecy?
In the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 two set of nations are depicted. There is an attacking set of nations, whose constituents are described in verses 1-6. These nations attack Israel after Israel has been regathered to their land. This prophecy has never been fulfilled.
There is also another set of nations described in verse 13. This set are not with the invading force and challenge them “Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?”
Our news headlines often relate to these sets nations as God works to bring about His purpose. We know God does this for we read in Daniel that “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” (Daniel 4:17)
We find that Iran is in the attacking set of nations. Its listed in verse 5 by its ancient name of Persia. The prophecy tells us it will be allied with Russia, parts of Northern Africa and Central and Western Europe and will be led by a mysterious character called Gog who will rally the armies of this alliance of nations down onto the mountains of Israel.
We find the US is part of the other set of nations who challenge Gog in that day. They are hinted at as being part of the lion nations of Tarshish and allied with the Gulf states listed by their ancient names of Sheba and Dedan.
The recent antagonism between the US and Iran then are a sure sign of the times. We see them on opposite sides as we would expect.
The latter day prophecy of Ezekiel 38 carries within it an interesting thing to ponder - in the prophecy the Tarshish power is unable or unwilling to stop the Gogian attack. This indicates a weakening of America on the global stage. So we wonder what might take place to make this occur. Will events in Iran contribute to this? We shall wait and see.
One thing is for sure. Soon the Gogian attack will take place as the prophecies in Gods word dictate they will. When that happens the prophecy explains God will act.
We read in verses 22-23: “And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.”
It is in that day that God will be known. Comparing this prophecy with others such as Joel 3 and Zechariah 12-14 we understand that God will act through His son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will have returned and gathered his faithful followers to him. He will have given them eternal life and so together they will go forth and save Israel from the attackers. He will then establish God’s Kingdom on the earth in Jerusalem. (Acts 1:6+11, Luke 1:32, Ezekiel 21:27, 2Thessalonians 1:7).
“For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” Habbukuk 2:14
It is that day that these prophecies point towards.
So we watch and wait.
Join us again next week God willing for another Bible in the News.
