What a moving scene it was on this Tisha B’Av, as thousands of Jews gathered at the western wall in Jerusalem, facing the site of the destroyed temple, and singing the words of a song, which is said to have been put to music by a Jew on a train to a Nazi death camp during the Holocaust. The words of the song in English are, “I believe with perfect faith, in the coming of the Messiah, even though he may tarry, nevertheless I will wait every day for his coming."
Let’s take a listen, to the regathered nation singing a portion of this song, this week on Tisha B'Av.
What an incredible scene as the regathered nation of Israel, with Jews from Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Canada, America, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Syria… in fact the Jewish people were dispersed in over 100 countries, speaking over 80 different languages and here thousands of them are singing a song of hope, of faith, together, in a common revived language! The God of Israel is a mighty God and has done wondrous things! And this is just the beginning! The Messiah will come and the temple will be built and Zion will be the light of the world.
In Luke 4, it is recorded how Jesus taught at the synagogue in Nazareth and quoted from Isaiah the prophet. He read a portion of the passage and finished with the words, "To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” It then says that, "he closed the book.” Jesus went on to teach that, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” The continuation of Isaiah’s prophecy was to be fulfilled in a future time. If Jesus had continued reading, he would have read:
“...and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
"And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.”
Today many of the Jewish people have returned and continue to return, the old wastes are being rebuilt. We can confidently say, “This day is this scripture being fulfilled in your ears." What we see now, is just a token of what is to come. But what an incredible token! This should strengthen our faith, so that we may believe and have rock solid, perfect faith, in the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. May that day come soon, when it will be fulfilled, as it says in Romans 15:10, “Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.”
